When we travel to coastal destinations, we expect to find clean beaches and clear waters, but this is not always the reality. A significant proportion of the plastic found in marine environments originates from everyday activities on land. Items like packaging, synthetic fibres from clothing, or personal care products can enter drainage systems through household waste and wastewater.
Once in the system, these materials can be transported through rivers, urban runoff, and sewage networks, eventually reaching the ocean. In this way, the plastic we use in our daily lives does not simply disappear after disposal. It continues its journey, often ending up far from its original source.
Understanding this process highlights the strong connection between our lifestyle choices, tourism, and the health of marine ecosystems. It also emphasises the importance of responsible consumption and waste management in reducing marine pollution.
Why plastics appear on beaches after heavy rain
In many coastal areas, large amounts of plastic debris can suddenly appear on beaches after periods of heavy rainfall. This phenomenon is closely linked to stormwater overflow and the limited capacity of urban wastewater systems.
During intense rain events, drainage and sewage systems may become overwhelmed by the volume of water. To prevent urban flooding, these systems are designed to release excess water, which often contains untreated or partially treated wastewater, into nearby rivers or directly into the sea. As a result, plastics and other waste that were previously trapped within the system are discharged into the environment.

In many cases, treatment plants are not equipped with the necessary technology to filter out microplastics, especially very small particles like synthetic fibres from clothing or microbeads from personal care products. These particles, often smaller than 5 millimetres, can easily pass through filtration systems and be discharged into rivers and oceans.
In addition, the efficiency of these systems depends on proper maintenance and infrastructure. If primary filters are outdated or poorly maintained, larger plastic items like wet wipes, cotton swabs or packaging materials can also pass through the system. Improper disposal by individuals, like flushing these items down the toilet, further increases the problem.
These limitations highlight the importance of reducing plastic use at the source. Preventing plastic from entering wastewater systems in the first place is far more effective than trying to remove it later.
Tourism and coastal pressure
Tourism plays a significant role in increasing pressure on coastal environments. During peak seasons, many coastal destinations experience a rapid and sometimes extreme increase in population due to the arrival of visitors.
This sudden growth means that wastewater treatment systems must handle a much larger volume of water and waste than they were originally designed for. When the system becomes overloaded, its efficiency decreases, and in some cases, part of the treatment process may be bypassed to prevent total system failure.
As a result, untreated or partially treated wastewater, often containing plastic debris, can be released into nearby rivers or directly into the sea. This situation is particularly common in areas with high levels of tourism or rapid urban growth.
Therefore, while tourism brings economic benefits, it can also indirectly contribute to marine pollution if not managed sustainably. This highlights the need for better infrastructure and more responsible tourism practices.
From plastic waste to microplastics in the food chain
Once plastics enter the ocean, they do not disappear. Instead, they are gradually broken down by sunlight, waves and physical abrasion into smaller fragments known as microplastics. These tiny particles are easily mistaken for food by marine organisms such as fish, shellfish and plankton. As a result, microplastics enter the food chain at its lowest levels and accumulate over time as larger animals consume smaller ones.
This process, known as bioaccumulation, means that microplastics can eventually reach seafood consumed by humans. In addition to the physical presence of plastic particles, these materials can also carry harmful chemicals that may pose risks to both marine life and human health.

In addition, choosing less crowded destinations can help reduce environmental pressure on areas that are already struggling with high levels of tourism. Simple actions, like avoiding products made from synthetic materials or reducing the use of plastic packaging, can also contribute to lowering the amount of microplastics entering wastewater systems.
Another simple but meaningful action is to collect waste when we come across it, both at home and especially while travelling. For example, picking up small pieces of litter during a walk on the beach can help prevent plastic from breaking down into microplastics and entering the ocean. At the same time, it sets a positive example for others and encourages them to reflect, rethink their own habits, and become more aware of the impact of their actions. We should not feel embarrassed about picking up litter. It is a responsible and meaningful action that helps protect the places we care about.
By making conscious decisions both at home and while travelling, individuals can help protect the environments they visit and reduce their contribution to pollution.
